CAMERA - MEKARON

"if I imagine a story about the camera, the story will show the future. It will be showing new generations what is happening within my community and the meaning of all the traditions and things associated with the Kayapó"

The camera, a Canon DSLR T5i, captures the traditions, ceremonies, crafts and life of the Mebêngôkre-Kayapó indigenous community in the state of Pará in Brazil. Despite the fact that its components and assembly come from the Western world, for some years the camera has been explored, learned and taken care of by the Mebêngôkre-Kayapó Peoples. The camera is a weapon for the fight against injustices that affect these peoples, because it allows them to show from their own perspective who they are and what their struggles are. Thus, the camera belongs to the Mebêngôkre-Kayapó and tells stories of resistance that they want to be transmitted from generation to generation.

Camera: Testimonials

The camera met its owner for the first time in 2017, when the Protected Forest Association donated equipment to the Mebêngôkre-Kayapó filmmakers to share their knowledge and traditions through audiovisuals. Pat-i is the owner, he received it, learned to use it and now, he transports it to every place he travels. Thus, they became a team of work and struggles and they will follow the path before them so that Mebêngôkre-Kayapó knowledge reaches the new generations.
